Skaftafell National Park & Svínafellsjökull

6th August 2003

After our early dash to get to Skaftafell in time for the start of the hike - arriving pretty much bang on 9am - we then waited around while everyone doing the hike was fitted with crampons. These odd metal spikey things fitted to the bottom of our shoes and allowed us to walk properly while on the glacier. We would be doing a two hour hike around the Svínafellsjökull tongue of Vatnajökull.

Once we had crossed over the glacial moraine (dirt and rocks pushed up into a heap as the glacier melts and crushes downwards) we were stood on the edge of the glacier - although due to the layer of dirt that builds up at the edge, it wasn't obvious at this point - as you can see in the picture below.

At this point we put our crampons on, and had a short lesson about how to walk in them - going down hill is particularly difficult although as it turned out, the slope that they had us practicing on was about twice as steep as anything we would come across once we got onto the glacier proper.

We then headed onto the glacier.

We reached our high point of the hike after over an hour of walking, with frequent stops to hear interesting facts and information about the glacier from our guide as we headed up. Below you can see the views from the top point we got to.

Due to a lack of any handy benches or cunning shaped rocks, we had another of the members of the hiking group take our photo - so here we are, stood on Svínafellsjökull.

After our jaunt around the glacier, we were taken back to the Skaftafell car park, where we spied something that we had seen very little of in the whole of our travels - trees in Iceland, and seemingly naturally occuring trees too!

Trees! In Iceland!!

Trees! In Iceland!!

In all fairness, they weren't at all tall, only a few feet, but they were none the less trees.

After making ourselves some lunch (having to buy bread at Skaftafell practically bankrupted us - 200IKR / UK£1.60 / US$2.60 - for a tiny loaf) we headed on our merry way back clockwise around route 1, hoping to get somewhere reasonably civilised to camp for the night.
